Ripi (FR) 7 Settembre 2025

Ripi, il cui nome deriva dal latino “Ripae”, presenta diverse teorie etimologiche. Alcuni studiosi sostengono che il nome si riferisca a “Ripae”, un privilegio accordato ai paesi della Diocesi di Veroli con arciprete, di cui Ripi era parte. Altri ritengono che il termine derivi da “ripa”, che indica gli argini del torrente Meringo, o da “rupes”, a causa della posizione elevata e scoscesa del paese. 

Le prime menzioni storiche di Ripi risalgono all’VIII secolo. Nel Sinodo Romano del 743, celebrato da Papa San Zaccaria, si fa riferimento alla Diocesi di Veroli, che includeva Ripi e altri centri. Secondo Monsignor Vittorio Giovardi, il “Castrum Riparum” fu distrutto nel 1129, e subì ulteriori devastazioni nel 1165 e nel 1198. 

La popolazione di Ripi visse a lungo sotto la dominazione feudale. Nel 1331, con la promulgazione di uno Statuto, si segnò una svolta per l’autonomia del castello. Vari signori, tra cui la potente famiglia Colonna, governarono Ripi fino al 1816, quando la giurisdizione baronale finì dopo la caduta di Napoleone.

 Visitando il centro storico di Ripi, si può esplorare la storia e le influenze culturali che hanno plasmato il paese. Le mura fortificate, che un tempo circondavano il borgo, sono oggi visibili solo in parte, con resti lungo la strada di La Moddia e Muriglio. Le due porte storiche, Porta Santa Croce e Porta Sant’Angelo, offrono accesso al paese, mentre le strade sinuose che attraversano il centro conducono a panorami mozzafiato sulla Ciociaria.
